Optic Nerve Head

The optic nerve is composed of approximately 1 to 1.5 million nerve fibers from the retina. The optic nerve carries the visual signal from the eyeball to the brain. Within the eye, the end of the optic nerve is visible as the optic nerve head, a disc-shaped structure in the posterior aspect, measuring approximately 1.5 millimeters across. The optic nerve head shows signs of damage in glaucoma.
