Band Keratopathy

A situation where calcium, a hard substance, deposits on the cornea, sometimes resulting in decreased vision. Occurs more commonly in children, especially those with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Band keratopathy can be removed by numbing the eye, then applying a chemical that loosens the calcium, allowing it to be gently scraped off. Band keratopathy can return.
